With the end of the year 2015 just around the corner, it is a good time to reflect back on the top performers of the year. 2015 was a dynamic year for the game of cricket with several players stepping up for their teams on numerous occasions. From gutsy batting performances to fierce bowling spells, here is part two of the list of the top performing cricketers of the year 2015. Click here for part 1.
Man of the series of the 2015 Ashes, Root is another player who has had a great 2015. Taking over from Michael Clark as the new captain, Steve Smith has had a terrific time with the bat in hand this year. Scoring 1270 runs in 12 test matches at an average of 63, Steve Smith was ranked as the fourth highest run scorer in test cricket (at the time this article was written). Along with his test performance Smith notched a total of 805 runs in 19 ODI at an average of 54. His performance in Australia’s world cup winning campaign was also instrumental, scoring a 100 against India in the semifinal while, scoring half centuries in the quarter final and the final against Pakistan and New Zealand respectively.
Considered by many as the best spinner in the world, Ashwin has undoubtedly led the Indian attack single handedly. His performance in the recent series against South Africa has been ground breaking. In the four match test series, Ashwin has claimed 31 wickets taking his tally of wickets in 2015 at 62 in just 9 test matches becoming the highest wicket taker of 2015 in test matches in the process. While some people might point out towards the fact that these wickets were taken on spinning tracks however, the kind of performance Ashwin has given throughout the year deserve recognition and thus he makes it to number 8 on our list.
Currently the best test opener in the world David Warner is another Australian who has had a great year. Scoring 1277 test match runs at an average of 58, the year was further proof of Warner’s credentials. At the same time David Warner also scored 652 runs in ODI at an average of 54 and strike rate of 110. Along with his performance Warner was also appointed as the new vice-captain of the Australian team hence, it can be said that Warner is currently at the peak of his career.
Hailed as the best leg spinner in the world by Shane Warne himself, Yasir has been the find of the decade for Pakistan. The leg spinner announced his arrival to the world with his performance against teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and England. Picking up 49 wickets in just 7 test matches, Yasir claimed two ‘man of the series’ awards this year. His performance in ODI might not be outstanding however; his exploits in the test arena are alone to merit his place on this list.
