2015 was a great year for Bollywood with numerous blockbuster films setting new benchmarks at the box office. Films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Tanu Weds Manu returns were not only well received at the box office but were also highly appreciated by the critics. So along with the aforementioned movies here is a list of the best Bollywood movies of 2015.
- Bajirao Mastani
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed film was in development for 15 years and the end result is a beautifully directed historical romance film. With a star cast that included Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, there was never much doubt about the success of Bajirao Mastani. The film opened to an average response however, word of mouth led the film to gross over RS 333 crore making the film one of the highest grossing Indian movies of all time in the process. Along with its commercial success, the film was also well received by the critics who praised the direction and the performances of the lead cast.
- Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Building upon the success of its prequel, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was highly appreciated by the audiences. The film narrates the events that take place four years after the original, following the story of the disturbed wedding of Tanu And Manu and how they are reunited. Upon its release both the audiences and critics unanimously praised the performances of the lead cast with Kangana Ranaut’s performance in her double role receiving particular appreciation. Made on a budget of RS 39 crore, the film earned 243 crore worldwide becoming a major commercial success in the process.
- Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Arguably the biggest star of the Indian cinema, Salman Khan produced yet another all-time block buster in the form of Bajrangi Bhaijaan this year. Directed by Kabir Khan the story of the film is about a 6 year old Pakistani girl Munni who is lost in India and how Salman Khan, playing the role of Pawan aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan, returns her to her mother while being labeled an Indian agent in the process. Upon its release the film broke all box office records grossing over 626 crores worldwide and becoming the second highest grossing Indian film of all time behind PK. The film also received the highest TRP rating of 15.5 at its television premier beating the previous record held by 3 Idiots.
Directed by Sriram Raghavan the crime drama film Badlapur was the darkest and most enthralling film of the year. The story of the film is about Raghu (Varun Dhawan) whose wife and kid have been murdered during a bank robbery. Raghu now aims to find the murderer of his wife Laik (Nawauddin Siddique) in order to exact revenge. While the film failed to break any box office records, it received an over whelming critical response with critics praising its story and the performances of the lead actors. Many observers also stated that Varun Dhawan gave the best performance of his career in the film.
Tamasha is a story about an individual who losses his sense of self and how he defies social conventions to find himself. The romantic film stared the popular duo of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and was directed by Imtiaz Ali. Upon its release the film struck a chord with the young generation of India and received a positive response eventually going on to collect RS 106.18 at the box office.
Fans had huge expectations from the Rohit Shetty directed Dilwale as the film featured a star cast and return of Bollywood’s most loved couple Sha Rukh Khan and Kajol. However, the film failed to impress critics and a major portion of the audience but the fact is that in spite of the underwhelming critical response the film was still able to make RS 350 crore. Due to this reason Dilwale makes it to the list of the best Bollywood films of the year.
