From Khans to Kapoors, star status has always been the key reason for major successes in Bollywood. Much of the anticipation and hype over a movie before its release depends on its casting. However, there are times when even the biggest stars of the industry fail to impress the audiences. Here is a list of movies which turned out to be the most shocking fails of 2015 even with their great casts.
Starring Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles, Tevar was the first big release of 2015. Pintoo (Kapoor) is a young Kabbadi player who, in a twist of fate, meets Radhika (Sinha), a girl who is being married against her wishes and sets out to help her. Co-produced by Boney Kapoor and directed by Amit Ravindernath, it is a remake of the 2003 Telugu movie Okkadu. The movie was received poorly by critics and only managed to collect 8.4 million dollars at the box office against a budget of 13 million.
Roy was much anticipated by movie-goers due to its star cast and the catchy soundtrack. It also marked a comeback of the actor Ranbir Kapoor who did not have any releases in the previous year. Directed by debutant Vikramjit Singh, the movie is a complex tale of a film director (Arjun Rampal), his love interest (Jacqueline Fernandez) and an international thief (played by Kapoor). Upon release, the movie proved to be a huge disappointment. Critic Shubhra Gupta noted, “I haven’t seen something as fuzzy and dreary as ‘Roy’ in a long time”. The movie also failed to make a mark on the box office.
- Kuch Kuch Locha Hai
Kuch Kuch Locha Hai is a comedy movie starring Sunny Leone, Ram Kapoor, Evelyn Sharma and Navdeep Chhabra in the leads. Praveen Patel is a married man living in Kuala Lumpur who gets to meet and live with an actress named Shanaya without the knowledge of his wife. Written and directed by Devang Dholakia, the movie was previously named Patel Rap. The movie was declared a box office disaster and received negative reception from reviewers.
- Bombay Velvet
Based on the book Mumbai Fables by Gyan Prakash, Bombay Velvet is a period crime drama movie. It tells the story of a Bombay street fighter Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) and his lady love, a jazz singer named Rosie (Anushka Sharma). Veteran producer Karan Johar also starred in the movie adding to its hype. The movie released to mixed reviews from critics with praise being drawn to the cast and criticism towards its underwhelming plot. Prarthna Sarkar described the movie as, “It’s bad, bad and some good rolled into one”. It also failed to woe the audiences.
Shaandaar has a comedic plot and follows the life of Alia Arora (Alia Bhatt) and her family who intend to get her sister married due to financial problems. It also stars Pankaj Kapoor and Sushma Seth. During the time of its release, the movie was highly anticipated due to its star cast. Upon release, Shaandaar was described by India TV as, “There is nothing Shaandaar about this Shahid-Alia starrer”. The film also failed to impress at the box office.
